i-Cooler - The Intelligent Cooling Pad invented by 3 students of University of Ruhuna
Sri Lanka is beautiful country with a lots of creative minds. Few outstanding students (Nirmani Ranchagoda, Thanura Malinga and Najath Akram) representing  Faculty of Engineering University of Ruhuna Sri Lanka made mother lanka proud at IET (Institution of Engineering and Technology) global challenge 2015 winning the 2nd place among 157 countries & this is what Najath had to say to us…
The Institution of Engineering and Technology is the largest multidisciplinary professional engineering institution in the world. Its worldwide membership is currently in excess of 153,000. The IET’s main offices are in Savoy Place in London, England and at Michael Faraday House in Stevenage, England. They organize the event called IET Global Challenge which aims to encourage Young Professionals across the globe to address a real world engineering challenge with their diverse academic and technical exposure. The Challenge will focus on the technical feasibility, efficiency and innovation of the proposed solution as well as challenge the marketing skills of participants.
There are various laptop cooling pads available in the market. They come in different brands, sizes, components and designs. The main requirement of a cooling pad is to reduce the operating temperature of the laptop. In using cooling pads in high temperature zones, just the airflow is not sufficient to reduce the internal temperature of the laptop. Passive coolers absorb heat from the laptop and use conduction to reduce temperature. This type is also not suitable to be used in high temperature zones since the reduction of temperature by conduction occurs relative to the environmental temperature. Therefore, IET Global Challenge 2015 was to design a laptop cooler which can solve these issues.
Our proposed i-Cooler is compatible with high environmental temperatures and it can control the temperature of the laptop. The proposed i-Cooler is also designed to be intelligent to change its functional properties according to the environment.
