'whipped with toxic stingray tails'
In the wake of the controversy surrounding Spanish singer Enrique Iglesias's recent musical show in Colombo, President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday assured that he would not allow any party to organise "indecent shows" in the country again.
"I am ashamed to say this before our own children. But, during the show, one girl threw her brassier at the singer performing on stage. This alone shows the level of their insanity," the President said addressing the prize giving of D.S.Senanayake National School in Ampara.
"The musical show lasted only for an hour. Prices of its tickets ranged from Rs. 5,000 to 50,000. Those who paid Rs. 5,000 were served Beer, while those who paid Rs. 20,000 were given Arrack and those who paid Rs. 30,000 were given Brandy. This is the power of liquor. This is how they are trying to protect our culture," the President remarked.
"Some people may criticise me talking about these issues.
But I am a Sinhala-Buddhist. It's my duty to talk about these matters," he added.
He also said that authorities should think about positive and negative aspects of such events, before giving approval.
"We should not go after rupees and cents. Our culture should be protected," President Sirisena said adding that 'indecent shows' are damaging the country's culture and reputation.
He said the government would take every possible measure to improve Dhamma education in the country.
The government will extend its fullest support to establish 50 Dhamma schools in Digamadulla District, with the assistance of Tri-Forces. "Dhamma school teachers who have served more than 10 years will be appointed as Justice of the Peace from next year," the President said.
